We can’t fully rely on words to understand the particular, classical experience from which our own tradition is coming from. So this is why reliance on the Spirit is more important than on the experts, although they certainly have a contribution to make in trying to understand what the Spirit originally was trying to say, but they’re only going to succeed up to a point. So Scripture needs the critical understanding and the support to grasp the culture and the meaning of words in that culture and the symbols that the teacher is using out of that culture, not to judge his words by the meaning of those symbols now, and to read back into the text, which is always the temptation, what we think it means, based on our contemporary usage of the words. How much can you rely on the sacred text? This is why Lectio Divina is more valuable from a spiritual point of view than the exegesis of the text. Because the exegesis of the text can become a science like every other. You study the root meanings of the words. This is valuable as a study and in understanding the literal meaning, but it doesn’t communicate the context or the spirit in which these words are originally contained that may be reflecting nuances of spiritual experience that the root of the words don’t necessarily communicate or transmit.Semana de agosto 17 – El Estudio Bíblico vs. la Lectio Divina
No podemos confiar totalmente en las palabras para comprender la experiencia particular de la que surge nuestra tradición. Es por eso que confiar en el Espíritu es mas importante que confiar en los expertos, aunque ciertamente estos tengan una contribución que hacer al tratar de comprender lo que el Espíritu originalmente trataba de decir, y aunque solo puedan tener éxito hasta cierto punto. La Escritura necesita de comprensión crítica y de apoyo para comprender la cultura y el significado de las palabras dentro de esa cultura, y lo que en esa cultura significaban los términos y los símbolos que usa el maestro – no para juzgar sus palabras según lo que ahora significan esos símbolos, ni para volver a interpretar lo que quieren decir los textos, lo que siempre es una tentación - lo que pensamos que significan basándonos en el uso actual de esas palabras¿En qué medida podemos confiar en el texto sagrado? Es por eso que la Lectio Divina es más valiosa desde un punto de vista espiritual que la exégesis misma del texto. Porque la exégesis del texto puede convertirse en una ciencia como cualquier otra. Se estudia la etimología de las palabras. Esto es valioso como estudio, y para entender el sentido literal, pero no comunica el contexto o el espíritu del que estas palabras estaban imbuidas originalmente, que pueden reflejar las sutilezas de la experiencia espiritual que la etimología de las palabras no necesariamente comunica o transmite.
