You asked, what Christianity has received from the other religions? I think, there’s still a lot to be received in actual fact. Because for so many centuries they’ve been separated geographically, and also by a lack of understanding or interaction. What is especially intriguing about our time is that this is the first time in history where spiritual teachers because of technological advances and traveling can actually meet each other, or intermingle and have dialogues at a level that was never possible before. And this ultimately will resolve an awful lot of misunderstandings, because you don’t understand the terms of the others unless you can dialogue about the experiences that give rise to the particular term. Like, the same word, like “emptiness,” has a different understanding in the East than it has in the West. So, if you use that word, you may communicate a whole different set of ideas to the other person, unless you first have dialog and understand the exact experience, insofar as that can be communicated or described, that lies behind this word. As far as I know, the only way to do this is by a certain friendship among the spiritual teachers and an opportunity for it to grow and to unfold. Because in this way, you have enough time and leisure and friendship for the teachers to feel at ease in revealing to each other the experiences that most help them in their tradition and which are enshrined in certain terms or phrases or descriptions that otherwise you would never fully understand if you just take the literal meaning of the words. Tú preguntaste que ha recibido el cristianismo de las otras religiones. Creo que tenemos mucho que recibir todavía, de hecho. Porque por muchos siglos han estado separadas geográficamente, y también por una falta de comprensión o interacción. Lo que es especialmente interesante de nuestra época es que es la primera vez en la historia en que los maestros espirituales – gracias a los avances tecnológicos y los viajes – pueden encontrarse unos con otros, o interactuar y dialogar en un nivel que nunca antes ha sido posible. Y eso, en ultima instancia, va a resolver muchos malos entendidos, porque no entendemos los términos de los otros a menos que podamos conversar acerca de las experiencias que hay detrás de un determinado término. Por ejemplo, la misma palabra – “vacío” – tiene una forma de interpretación diferente en oriente que la que tiene en occidente, así que, si usamos la palabra, podemos comunicar ideas muy diferentes a la otra persona, a menos que antes dialoguemos y comprendamos las experiencias exactas - en la medida en que puedan ser comunicadas o descriptas - que hay detrás de esa palabra.Por lo que yo sé, la única manera de hacerlo es por medio de una cierta amistad entre maestros espirituales, dándole una oportunidad para que esta relación crezca y se desarrolle. De este modo hay suficiente tiempo y tranquilidad y amistad para que los maestros se sientan cómodos para revelarse mutuamente las experiencias que más los ayudan en su tradición, que están consagradas en ciertos términos o frases o descripciones que de otro modo nunca comprenderíamos totalmente si tomáramos sólo el significado literal de las palabras. Las palabras pueden significar diferentes cosas en diferentes culturas y tradiciones, aun cuando se use la misma palabra.
